Following a game of golf at Medway Golf Club in 1972, Mr. Tony Meden put his idea of forming an Italian Association of Golfers to a small group of Italian businessmen who were most enthusiastic with his idea. Mr. Meden instigated the idea by having articles published in the local Italian newspapers, Il Globo and La Fiamma. He invited golfers to a meeting held on 5th October, 1972, at the Tre Botti Restaurant, Carlton where the Italian Golf Association was officially formed with an initial membership of 15 Italian members. Mr. Meden was elected President, Prospero Papaleo as Secretary and Ron D’Aprano as Treasurer. The rest of the Committee consisted of John Pallisco, Mariano Valmorbida and Angelo Nicosia. The first competition day was held at Yarra Bend Golf Course on 15th October, 1972. Since these humble beginnings, games have been held at every major golf course in Victoria, including the likes of Royal Melbourne, Kingston Heath, Metropolitan and Huntingdale, where the Italian Golf Association is made most welcome. From the initial membership of 15, that figure has now grown to almost 200 members. For the first ten years of our Association, Committee meetings were held at the homes of various Committee members and then at a number of venues scattered around Melbourne, from Brunswick to South Yarra. In 1986, we purchased our own clubrooms at 79 O’Connell Street North Melbourne. The Italian Golf Association organises approximately 35 games a year, with the four major days being the Pro-Am, Coppa Italia, The Italian Open and Junior Day. Other main events on our calendar are the Club Championships, Doubles Match Play, Singles Match Play, The Masters and the various Seasonal Cups. Due to the success of our Club in 1989 the South Australian Italian Golf Club was formed and in 1996 the Italian Golf Association of Sydney was formed. In 2002 the Itallian Golf Association of Queensland was also formed. Annual interstate games between the Associations are a highlight of our golfing year and a great opportunity to play at some fine interstate courses and to keep in touch with our friends and make new friends from over the borders. We have a Juniors programme in place which will assure the future of the Italian Golf Association in Melbourne.
